Why Are Shutters So Popular on Homes?

September 15th, 2009 Gus Kopalinski No comments

Do most houses have shutters that really work or are they there just for decoration? Many houses have what are called decorative shutters that look great but aren’t really shutters. They are made to look like the real thing but they really don’t work at all. If you take a close look at most house shutters, you will find the majority of them are just for there for decoration.

Real working shutters, on the other hand, can provide real protection from wind, rain, and sun. In some of the states where hurricanes are a threat, homeowners install storm shutters and hope they are strong enough to protect the windows and house from very strong winds. Most houses though, don’t have a need for real working shutters and the homeowners just like the shutters look.

Shutters can come in a variety of styles and colors and can be tailored to give a house a vintage look. They can also come in more modern styles. All in all, decorative shutters are a great way that is relatively inexpensive to add a little flair to the outside of a house. Many people who own houses realize that with very little out of pocket cost, they can raise the “curb appeal” of their house.

Exterior wooden shutters are what most people initially want for their homes when they start investigating shutters. But wood is not the only material that exterior shutters can be made out of and in fact, it is one of the least durable. Outside shutters can be made of fiberglass, vinyl, composite, and aluminum materials many of which stand up to the elements better than real wood. The fact is that all those materials can be made to look just like wood and in many cases they wont warp and wear like real wood will.

Since most exterior shutters are merely for decoration, they are never placed over windows themselves. They are just mounted on the side of the windows and putting shutters up in this fashion is rather easy and inexpensive to do. You usually only see house shutters from a distance and it is nearly impossible to tell the difference between a real wood shutter and one made of another material.

Snow blowers come in many different types depending on your needs. Homeowners will choose a completely different version than the professional who uses the snow blower every day. Homeowner versions tend to cost less then the professional versions.

Snow blowers with gas engines are the more popular choice. The width of the clearing path is another functionality you may want to look at during your research. The depth of the snow the snow blower can handle is called the clearing height. Clearing height and path width can be figured out by looking at your weather history.

Optional accessories can be added to the snow blower. Overall price of your snow blower may increase but there extra options may be important to you. Different light packages may be optional for using the snow blower at night. Do you want a manual or electric starter? An extension cord with of course power is needed for the electric starter. If you live in the city and only need your porch and sidewalk cleared off, a small electric snow blower may be a good option. They are relatively inexpensive and require a long extension cord. Some of these smaller snow blowers also come with a gas powered motor.

There are many attachment for adding a plow or snow blower to your lawn tractor. The lack of wheel traction may be the downside of using your tractor to plow snow. Traction problems will be resolved by adding special tires, chains and weight. Spinning tires will kill you snow blowing experience.

A gas powered two stage snow blower comes with a forward and reversible drive and uses auger blades made from steel. The 2 stage blower breaks thru the hard-packed snow, grinds it and shoots it out the adjustable snow chute. The multi-directional snow chute can send the snow in any direction via joystick. The two stage snow blower is excellent for gravel surfaces because it leaves space between the surface and blades so as not to have steel blades hitting stones.
