Sprouting Seeds in Paper Towels Project

October 4th, 2009 No comments

Your toddler can learn how things grow by sprouting seeds in a paper towel. It is very easy to do, and only takes a few minutes to get started. You can actually find most of the stuff lying around your house. In fact, if you and your assistant begin collecting items you’ll need right now, you’ll see sprouts growing in less than three days!

Here’s what you need to do first. Buy some growing seeds, a big plastic clear bag, and a plate. (The water and light will be your cheapest ingredient). Make sure the plate will fit inside the clear bag. If the bag is too small to slide the plate in, then you’ll need to find a new plate that’s smaller. Let your toddler help with seeing if the plate to bag ratio will work.

Now it’s water time! Kids love to play in the water, so let your child soak the paper towels with water, and wring them out. He’ll probably do this a few times to many, and the paper towels will tear, so have some backups ready just in case. Lay the wet paper in the plate as flat as possible.

In a single layer, spread the seeds on the wet paper towel, taking care not to let them touch. (If some of them touch, it’s okay). Make sure the growing seeds are not stacked on top of each other.

Add the other wet paper towels on top of the sprinkled seeds, and slide everything into the plastic bag. Make sure you keep the sprouts in a dry place, and check on them daily. To prevent mold, you can grow them in a dark place, but it will take longer.

Sprouting seeds is a great way to teach your child how things grow. It also gives them the opportunity to see what happens below the dirt’s surface. Try this project, and you’re sure to get a smile from your young gardener.
