House search by the seaside (part 2)

So we continued to stare at different areas of the same newspaper – me on the period town houses, and my wife on the new properties. Somewhere all the way we would have to reach a compromise, otherwise our day would be wasted.

Perhaps there was a third route that we could explore – one that would enable us to make the move temporarily and not permanently. If we rented, so the idea went, it would get us away from the big city and give us the opportunity to search at our leisure. We both agreed that the idea could have some mileage, so we concentrated our efforts within the section over the page called ‘Property to let West Sussex’. The area covered was quite substantial, a good deal wider than I had thought. We need to find something close to a railway line, to enable me to continue travelling to work.

We were even prepared to look for a flat, if it offered us the right amount of space, as we weren’t particularly driven by parking space problems. The newspaper showed that the town had a poor section on flats to rent in Sussex, which surprised me. Because the town was set close to the sea and had a rich tradition, I thought there would be an abudance of sites. I would consider checking online for any possiblities, and even advertise on sites such as Gumtree.

Although this seemed a sensible route to take, I wasn’t going to give up easily on my dream of a little Victorian terrace house. You could still find a reasonbly priced house in Worthing as opposed to those in Brighton or Hove, which had raced away over the years. I would continue the search later, as made some mental notes of the phone number for ’houses for sale in Sussex’. I would save these for later when we returned home, and were able to relax and think of our day.

Heading for the seaside (part 1)

I’ve had enough of the big city, with its pollution and way too many people. You can easily loose your identity and feel like a number, so I’m off to the seaside if possible. We’re on a special trip down here, not only for the change of scene and the lovely fresh air. We are here to look around the town in the hope of finding a new home and fresh place to live.

We went straight to the beach upon arrival and saw that the tide way way out in the far distance. The town is unique at low tide, because the sea water goes out much further than the end of the pier. People often dig their fresh baits in the sand and walk the full distance from one side of the pier to the other. i have memories of a trip here with my father years ago on a similar low tide day, and remember him laughing at something. He pointed to a fisherman on the pier, who had dozed off and not noticed that the tide had long ago gone out. There was no water to be seen anywhere, and his float was resting on a small pile of sand!

I bought a copy of the local Echo and began to look through the property area property sussex’. One thing that caught my eye was the large section entitled ‘commercial property sussex which seemed to be offering plenty of properties. I may have been looking at the direct result of the recession with piles of failing business, and their premises that had been re-advertised.

My heart was set on one of the many Victorian town houses with features that I could lovingly restore, but my wife was not so interested. She would have been content in a new house outside of the town, and had been concentrating on another area of the paper. Her eye had focused on the adjacent advertisement entitled ‘new homes in West Sussex’, which had a wider reach than the town centre.
