Two Weeks to Go: Moving Day Is Drawing Near

June 4th, 2009 No comments

Fourteen days can be a long time, but not when you’re moving. There are so many chores to do in addition to packing that it can be easy to overlook some or fall behind if you don’t make a list and follow a schedule.

Avoid problems with scheduled deliveries by contacting the shippers with your new address, and arranging to have a temporary hold placed on shipments until you’ve taken possession of your new home.

If you have a home business and haven’t already notified your clients that you’re moving, do so right now. Failure to give your clients adequate notice could cause them to go somewhere else. Also send out personal notices to friends and family with your new address and phone number.

Filing a change of address form with the Post Office and requesting mail forwarding should be done now. Be sure to find out which kinds of mail automatically get forwarded and which don’t; you don’t want to miss out on anything important, but on the other hand you really don’t need to have your junk mail follow you; it’ll soon start piling up at your new address anyway.

There are some things you should never have forwarded: payments, banking and tax information-anything you can’t afford to lose, and that could lead to identity theft if it fell into the wrong hands.

In the past it was probably okay to ask the family moving into your old home to send any stray mail to you, but this really isn’t a good practice any longer.

Many of us don’t realize how much more there is to moving than simply packing and cleaning until we’re in the middle of it. Making yourself aware of other important tasks ahead of time will help prevent a lot of headaches down the road.

How to Spend the Final Two Days before Your Move

Your last two days before moving may find you with your head in your hands, wondering how you’re going to get finished in time. Let all activities not related to your move fall by the wayside for now and focus on finishing up the packing, cleaning, etc., still to be done.

Of course, it’s not only packing and cleaning you’ll be dealing with for this last 48 hours; there are other chores to be done as well.

Check with the utility companies at your old residence as well as at your new one, to confirm that you won’t be charged for any usage that’s not yours, and that you’ll have access to all of the services that you need in plenty of time.

Gather up all of your important documents and keep them in a safe place. It’s a good idea to make a set of copies and leave them with a friend or relative, so you’ll always have them available when you need them.

Clean out your refrigerator and freezer. If you have more food left than you can eat in two days’ time, contact a local food bank to see if they will accept it.

It’s important to say a proper farewell to the friends and neighbors you’ve shared your life with before leaving the old neighborhood for good. If you can, consider hosting a small catered party just before you leave. You might even get people to pitch in with some of the packing and cleaning!

Your final 48 hours in your old home are sure to be frantic, but they don’t have to be overwhelming. Keep yourself organized with checklists, keep items you’re still using in a centralized location, and stay focused on the exciting new adventures that await you in your new home.
