How To Find A Good Home Security Company

September 29th, 2009 No comments

A home security company should help relieve concerns about the safety of your family and of your home. Take special care when choosing a company to sign up with. There is no gain in having a faulty security system installed or relying on an incompetent company for assistance when trouble occurs. Make sure that the company you choose fits well with your families daily lives and includes the level of protection that you most desire.

Ask about personal experiences from around your neighborhood. Direct personal experience is always invaluable when considering home security companies. Your neighbors may have already gone through the entire selection process and could have great advice for you. Search for the companies online as well, there may be customer reviews for national businesses. Finally, ask the security company itself for a list of references. See what current customers like and dislike about the services that are provided.

A good home security company will be licensed. The license will probably be specific to the state or jurisdiction that they are operating in. Large, national companies should also hold some type of license. You may want to check the Better Business Bureau as well to see if there are any unanswered complaints pending against the security company, or if there is a pattern of complaints being lodged against them.

Read through the information that the home security company provides, and check their website too. Get a firm grasp of exactly what they are offering and what it will cost. Look for options that you may want and research them to know if they are right for you. If you are considering a home security monitoring service, know what their monthly charges are and what that payment entitles you to. Be very familiar with their procedures before you make any decisions.

Look at the keypads, controls and devices that get installed. Understand what each one does and how it interacts with the others. Measure out the size of the control panel, if you can not find one to look at in person, and check that your fingers will be able to comfortably use the buttons or dials. Take a look at the display panel and status lights, they should be easy to read and clearly understandable.

Page through the service contract you are given. Take as much time as needed to read and understand each part. For installations and other one-time jobs, make sure there are stated warranties. If a camera system is installed and does not function a week later, it should clearly stated in the contract that they will repair or replace the system at no cost. All of the information about monthly fees or special charges for advanced services should be explicitly listed when reviewing a contract for a monitoring service. A good home security company should have a good contract.

If after a period of time you are not happy with the performance of the equipment or the security company, let them know. Sometimes they can fix the situation. If they fail to meet your expectations, though, it may be time to consider moving on to another company. This is mainly for home monitoring businesses. You may lose some money changing to another service, but it will be worth it if it makes you feel safer.

Fire Alarms Can Save Lives

September 28th, 2009 1 comment

Fire alarms help prevent death and property damage. While they can be pricey for a large system, fire alarms are worth every penny. In order to work effectively, fire alarms must be properly maintained. The entire system must also work together to save lives, property, and be economical. Smoke and heat detectors work with sprinkler systems to alert people to fire while extinguishing flames before the fire can spread.

The most important part of any fire alarm system is the smoke detector. Smoke detectors can save your life by alerting you to smoke from fire. You can find many smoke detectors that can also detect the odorless, but deadly carbon monoxide. Most rooms in the home should be equipped with a smoke detector. The number of smoke detectors in your home is determined by its size. Some areas may require several smoke detectors. All smoke detectors rely on batteries for power. Newly built homes will have smoke detectors already hooked to the electrical wiring, but they still contain a backup battery. Change your battery at least once a year, and check each smoke detector to make sure it works.

Heat detectors work with smoke detectors by alerting you to a dramatic change in temperature. Rate-of-rise heat detectors alert you to your home’s temperature change over a certain period of time, usually one minute. Any time your home’s temperature changes quickly the alarm will sound. Fixed temperature heat detectors will alert you when your home’s temperature reaches a specific fixed measurement.

Heat detectors can be used to compliment your fire alarm system, but it should never replace a smoke detector. By the time the heat detector sounds, the fire could have already spread rapidly around your home. Heat detectors are great to pair with smoke detectors because you can use them in places where smoke detectors are not allowed. The kitchen, for example, is one place that smoke detectors cannot be placed; so using a heat detector can alert you to a kitchen fire before a smoke detector in another room. Fixed temperature heat detectors are perfect for the kitchen since the rate-of-rise detector may sound when cooking due to a rapid rise in temperature.

Sprinklers cannot alert you to smoke or heat, but they can come in handy when a fire does break out. Sprinkler systems release water when a designated temperature is reached. The individual sprinkler heads will only activate if the temperature below hits this designated temperature threshold. This means that the sprinkler heads closest to the fire will activate, allowing more water to extinguish the fire before it spreads to other areas.

A sprinkler system will cause water damage to your home, but not having one can cause even more water and fire damage. Firefighters use more water than sprinkler systems to put out fires. Many times, the house is so engulfed in flames by the time the firefighters get to your home that it causes more fire damage.

Fire alarms have saved numerous lives. Smoke detectors are a necessary part of any fire alarm system. A combination of a smoke detector, heat detector, and sprinkler system can save property and lives.
