Make your Home Decor Fashionable

September 5th, 2009 No comments

Over the years I have become keenly aware at how a persons individual style for fashion does not always spill over into the way they decorate their homes. I have met several people in my lifetime that I like to refer to as Fashionistas who have a great style for fashion and are always up “to-date on the latest trends and they usually have to have an excellent job or career to go along with those fashionable tastes. With that said, those same people have invited me over for a dinner or just to visit and I walk into their homes and I am completely shocked at the lack of attention they give their dcor or the out-dated way they have decided to decorate.

I am the last person who will judge a person based by what they wear or what their home looks like, so I do not want you to misunderstand what I am saying when I make that previous statement. It just comes as a shock when you see someone who is so into fashion neglect the fashion of their own home. There are also others who think they have a flair for home dcor but really do not have the first clue as to some of the dos and do nots of home dcor.

This article will focus on some of the fashion rules that you should follow when choosing the style your home is going to present to the people who live there and to your guests. I would have to say that first rule of home fashion is to make sure that you purchase at least one piece of furniture that is going to stand the test of time, such as your dining room table, an oriental rug or area rug or something antique like and armoire. Area rugs specifically will add just the right touch to any room without overwhelming the room with a cluttered feel and an area rug is also a great accent for any room that has a high traffic area to be able to protect the flooring underneath.

Instead of keeping every room in a neutral color, you need to spice things up a bit and add some brilliant colors to certain rooms of the home such as a bedroom or breakfast nook. This will take away the constant need to redecorate or add too much clutter to a room to spice it up when you get bored with it. Taking the time to initially add bright color to a room will keep you satisfied for a very long time.

Using the right type of lighting in each room is going to make a major difference in the feel of your home. If you have a large living area, for example, using two floor lamps or two end table lamps to light the entire room is not going to give the proper light, nor will it do the room justice. Instead you should opt for track lighting in large rooms or even recessed lighting.

When you are ready to get caught up on fashion for your home and are ready to start to decorate or re-decorate, do some online research or pick up a home dcor magazine and you will be sure to find some great ideas and even some ideas that with a little bit of your own imagination, you can expand on.

Bring Life to Your Hardwoods

September 4th, 2009 No comments

There is no doubt that hardwood floors offer class and beauty to the attractiveness of a home. Sometimes, however, hardwood floors might be too plain for a certain room or just not give off that extra sense of style to a room that otherwise has great dcor. There is an easy way to resolve this and it is simply to accent your hardwood flooring with area rugs.

Carpeting in homes was really not a popular form of decorating a home until the late 50s early 60s in contemporary America. Prior to that time, most homes were automatically suited with hardwood floors and as the years passed and homes changing homeowners, carpeting began to be the more popular flooring choice for many years.

Now, it is becoming more and more common to see people returning to the hardwood floor coverings but most people are also turning to the placement of area rugs to add just the perfect accent to a room or an entryway.

Area rugs have been around for centuries and they are multi-functional in the sense that they not only add class or accent to any area of the home, but they are often used to pad heavy furniture, covering up areas of damage or being keep on the more high traffic areas of the home.

Currently, the more popular area rugs are the contemporary ones because they come in a large variety of sizes and patterns as well as color schemes. This makes the rug easy to match with any dcor in any room and there are several different contemporary rugs that also go great in a room that already has a theme, such as a southwestern theme or an outdoor theme.

Something you should always keep in mind when selecting an area rug is the size. You do not want to get one that is too large or it will overshadow the rest of the flooring and can be overwhelming as well. Before you head out to go shopping for your area rug, you should already have in mind the area of flooring that you want covered and pre-measure the area so that you can focus only on those rugs that will fit the area. Try not to get sidetracked by the rugs that are larger, it is easy to do because they are so beautiful, but if it does not fit, it does not fit.

Finally, you will want to pay attention to the feel of the rug and ask yourself how many times this rug will be used as a seat, or to be laid on, or if you are just using the rug under a piece of furniture such as a coffee table. If you are just using the rug to accent a room and placing it under a piece of furniture, then the texture is not as important.

If you are purchasing an area rug because it will be a focal point of a certain room such as a family room, chances are, there will be a lot of time spent on the floor by your family or guests so you will want to try to choose one that feels very comfortable to the touch.
