DIY Wind Turbine Crash Course

You’ve finally decided to go green and make your own wind turbine to power your house – once you’ve collected all the parts, how do you assemble everything?

Here’s how you do it in 9 easy steps:

Phase 1: Procure or buy all the components on eBay or from any nearby hardware shop ” DC power motor, metal sheets, PVC pipe, hub, tower, deep-cycle battery, charge controller, dump load, AC inverter, and sufficient nuts and bolts to connect three blades to your tower.

Part 2: Now, cut your PVC pipe into an approximately 3 ft. long piece, and cut the pipe itself into 4 pieces (since you need 3 blades). Shape each blade so that one side comes to a 2″ point. The blades should each be between 4′ and 6′ long.

Part 3: Now, make holes on the narrow end of your blades so that their positions align with the holes in your hub.

Phase 4: Now, attach a coupling to the middle of your hub and join the 3 blades to this hub, attaching the hub itself to the motor shaft – you should be able to do this with 12″ by 2″ steel bars.

Phase 5: Align the blades and the hub by marking each blade with a number and making sure that the same blade does not land at the bottom every time ” if so, then you may have to scrape some metal off your connected metal bars.

Stage 6: Gently place the DC motor shaft into the hole at the center of your hub (you may drill it if you have not done it already). Check to see that the hub is secure.

Part 7: Now, look at your tail shaft to figure out the height and make a hole through the top part of the tower, above where the tail shaft’s upper end will go.

Stage 8: Then, cut the original tail shaft from your metal, so that it measures around 3 to 4 ft long and then attach it to the tower using a flat bracket.

Phase 9: Now, make sure that your hub and the blades are joined to your tower and then wire the remaining components together. Remember to connect the DC motor to the charge controller and then connect that to the battery, and the battery to the AC inverter, which in turn goes into your utility box. The thickness of cable you will require would depend on the materials you used ” if you need a professional opinion, call an electrician.

This is just a simple introduction to DIY wind turbines, but with just these instructions you should be able to start making your own.

The wind turbine described above should generate 300-500 watts of power, assuming that your mean wind velocity is a minimum of 10-20 mph.
