Concrete Driveways Add To Curb Appeal

May 28th, 2009 No comments

They are attractive, strong and able to resist oil stains. They’re also relatively inexpensive. Perhaps that’s why concrete driveways have become a popular choice for homeowners looking to boost the outdoor appeal of their properties.

Today, most homeowners and business owners installing new driveways choose poured concrete. And while most homeowners choose a standard grey finish, one of the benefits of today’s concrete is that it comes in a wide array of decorative finishes.

Though ordering a new driveway is largely a simple process, homeowners just do some research before making their final decisions. Homeowners can start this homework by first considering the existing look and feel of their residences. They can then choose a driveway look that complements rather than contrasts with their home’s style and landscaping.

The process of redesigning an existing concrete driveway is a fairly simple one. Contractors basically add decorative elements to a driveway’s top layer, usually by adding a thin new layer of concrete to the driveway’s existing base, staining the driveway a new shade or cutting new designs into its surface level.

One of the more popular techniques now available is concrete staining. In this method, workers mark off various sections of the driveway and then stain them colors that work well together, making the entire driveway look like it is made of inlaid stones.

Contractors can also add saw-cut patterns to the stained concrete. This technique is created by literally sawing lines into the concrete’s surface. Geometric shapes such as squares and rectangles are used in this effect.

There are even more options for homeowners ordering a new poured-concrete driveway. For instance, to replicate the look of a brick or stone driveway, homeowners can have their driveway stamped, giving it the look of inlaid stone. They can also choose to have their driveway colored or stained. This technique also creates the look of clean stone. Contractors can also engrave concrete or give it a textured finish. This is done when workers add pebbles, stones, or salt to the top layer.

Decorative concrete techniques are a visually stunning way to magnify the curb appeal and beauty of any residence. Like all driveways, though, concrete versions do not last forever without suffering cracks. Fortunately, repairing a concrete driveway requires little more effort than is involved in repairing a sidewalk. Workers will first cut away the crack. They will then clean the area surrounding it. Finally, they will add new concrete mix to the crack.

Adding or renovating a concrete driveway is a great way for homeowners to breath some new life into their properties. The right driveway, which homeowners can create with just a little research, can add greatly to the enjoyment they get out of their homes.
