10 Top Tips for Looking After Your Dog

Cats and dogs are very different in the way they show a human affection. A dog is a lot more loyal than a cat. Many people treat their dog the same as they would treat a child.

Tip 1 ” When you first get your dog, it is a good idea to attach an identification tag to their collar. Many owners do this so if the dog goes missing or runs away the dog can be easily returned.

Tip 2 – You need to find out what the laws with regards to registering your dog and having them vaccinated. Today it is a legal requirement that all animals kept as pets are fitted with a microchip. This is done by your vet and generally the cost of having it inserted between the animal’s shoulder blades is around $50. There are some microchips which just provide an identification number, whilst others are designed to actually read the animals temperature as well. Once inserted the information is then entered into a database and should an animal be lost and found with such a chip they can be returned to you as their owner much more quickly.

Tip 3 ” When walking your dog it is always best to keep them on the lead until you get to the park or open space. Some dogs are also classed as dangerous and may need a muzzle.

Tip 4 – Although you dog may be inside most of the time when they are outside in the garden still make sure that they have adequate shelter, especially if you intend to leave them there whilst out. But although you may keep them outside you should also spend time with them as well and these are pack animals and so they like to be with others.

Tip 5 ” Make sure that you take your dog to vets regularly this is always a good idea so the dog get a regular check up. If you tend not to take your dog to the vets, then if you dog had a serious illness it could cost you a lot more.

Tip 6 – Unless you are intending to breed from your dog it is important that you have the spayed or neutered. Many dogs after having this routine surgery carried out tend to live much longer and tend to be much healthier and have far less behavioural problems.

Tip 7 ” Eating healthy is very important to your dog, so you must get it right. Most people will feed their dog dry dog food this is perfectly fine as it has all the nutritional ingredients needed. Other options include fresh meals – this is great if you have the time. It is always a good idea to speak to your vet about what is best for your dog.

Tip 8 ” Your dog will start to respect you a lot more if you were to take them to dog obedience classes. Dogs really enjoy these classes as they will learn a lot about how to behave in and outside of your home. You will also learn a lot about how to look after your dog and after time a mutual respect will build.

Tip 9 ” You should always allow time for your dog; take them for walks around once or twice a day. Dogs love open space so a trip to the park is ideal.

Tip 10 ” Dogs, like humans need cleaning, so it is a good idea to clean their coat and maybe their teeth. If you are unsure on how to do any of this you can ask your vet or take your dog to a dog grooming centre.

You should train your dog to eat anywhere. You should train him to eat indoors, outdoors and in any room. Doing this will help you in future when you take the dog with you anywhere.

An important part of dog training is to train him to use the crate. Then you can carry the crate anywhere. The puppy should be trained to sit in the crate. As far as potty training is concerned, you should buy a flexi leash and train the dog to go potty there.

You should train your dog to be quiet in the car. He should stay quiet when you ask him to. You can encourage him to follow your order by rewarding him every time he agrees to what you say. So he can become obedient and accept all your orders.

You can use the dog training session to establish a good and respectful relationship with your dog. If the dog is trained well, you will be confident of controlling him in any situation.

You should never beat or kick your puppy. This will have a bad effect on him and he will not accept your orders. You can warn the dog by saying “No”. Also teach him to use the toilet every time and clean the spot where he urinates sometimes.

Some dogs love chewing the furniture. The reason can be that he just likes chewing things. You can stop him from doing so. You can buy some good chewing toys that will catch the interest of your puppy and not make him feel bored.

You should obedience training an important part of dog training. Do not train your dog for long hours otherwise he will be bored and not learn anything. Try to teach your dog to follow simple commands and never slap or kick him.
