Pruning and spraying trees and shrubs can begin now that deciduous trees and shrubs have lost their leaves. Of course, spring-flowering shrubs such as lilac and forsythia should not be touched now; they should be pruned after they flower.

Although dormant oil sprays are usually not applied until early spring, they can actually be used on any sunny day during the winter when the temperature promises to stay above 40 for eight hours or more.

Transplanting – Fall transplanting can be continued as long as the soil can be worked easily. The later the planting is done, however, the more necessary it is to have a mulch over the roots.

If a tree is not too large, it is sometimes practical for the homeowner to move it with a frozen ball. Trench around the tree now so that frost can get deep into the ground. Don’t undercut the ball until you are ready to move the tree.

Caring for your lawn – Remember that heavy traffic on the lawn is damaging, even when the ground is frozen. There may be dead turf by spring.

Apply a turf fungicide now to areas which were troubled with snow mold last winter. Another way to discourage this disease is to keep leaves and grass clippings from collecting on the turf.

Propagating shrubs – As soon as the wood is hard, but before heavy freezing occurs, take hardwood cuttings of your shrubs. Store them in sand or slightly dampened sphagnum moss until spring.

Planting spring bulbs – If your nursery or garden center is still selling good sound spring-flowering bulbs such as daffodils and tulips, don’t be discouraged from buying them because you think the planting season is past. As long as the soil can be worked there’s still time to plant.

Storing garden tools – After cleaning the garden tools, lawn mower and hose, put them under cover for the winter. Wash out the sprayer and store it upside down with the top off.

Encouraging the birds to winter in Hie garden – Keep the birds around your garden if possible by providing food and water for them. Many winter birds pay their way by eating insects.

Protecting the garden for the winter – From now on protection for the roses is an absolute must just like ficus tree care. Hill up fresh soil around the base of each bush. Wait until after a sharp freeze to mulch the strawberries and perennials, or mice may move into the mulch.

Inspecting vegetables in storage – From time to time examine stored vegetables. Leafy vegetables such as cabbage and endive are prone to rot.

Sowing hardy annuals – All hardy annuals can be sown in the fall. In many parts of the Middle West fall sowing is the only way to produce good plants of such cool-weather annuals as Shirley poppies, larkspurs and calendulas. Just before the ground freezes for the winter, broadcast the seed on well-prepared soil. The seed will remain dormant until spring, then will start into growth long before the soil can be worked.

There is no quality more defining when choosing your next bed than comfort. If you are not comfortable while reclining on a bed, you do not want to pay for that particular bed or mattress. Before buying any bed or mattress, you should make an effort to explore every one of your options. Never settle for the first bed in the store because you might miss out on a wonderful opportunity like Sealy Adjustable Beds.

If you are shopping for value and comfort, Sealy Adjustable Beds are absolutely your best option. There is no quibbling about it. The traditional appearance of this bed effortlessly works with any decor that your room currently has. So, you don’t have to be concerned about your adjustable bed sticking out like a sore thumb. The Wallhugger technology that is included with these beds keeps your night table at hand even during the times that your torso is in the upright position.

The world’s biggest manufacturer in the field of adjustable beds engineered the Sealy Adjustable Beds as well as the Sealy True Foam Mattresses. Sealy Adjustable Beds are intended for durability and performance. These mattresses have the remarkable ability to support you better than all of the other mattresses and beds which are available today. Sealy offers you the plushest, most sumptuous bed that is comfortable and is made to support you, enabling you to feel comfortable as well.

The Sealy Adjustable Beds are not hard to reposition because they are made of strong but lightweight parts. You will experience no problems moving the bed when you are cleaning your room. There are very few beds that are easy to move around. Most beds are heavy and will not move unless two or three people are helping. Sealy Adjustable Beds, fortunately, can be quickly repositioned by only one person.

However, complementing your decor and being quickly repositioned are only a few of many attributes that this bed includes; it also is designed to aid you with common medical problems.

Sealy Adjustable Beds can assist you in instances where you are recuperating from an injury. These beds can also help you when you are bed ridden or not sleeping well. There are also benefits to using Sealy Adjustable Beds when you are having circulation or breathing problems while sleeping.

Sealy Adjustable Beds are often seen in nursing homes as well as private homes for long-term convalescents. When it comes to the Sealy Adjustable Beds, you have two distinct models of mattresses for your approval. First, you have mattresses constructed using the True Form Memory Foam. These mattresses have no spring construction and they are often recommended for relieving aches and pains.

The other kind of mattresses which are available Sealy Adjustable Beds is the Sealy Reflexion Latex Mattresses which are engineered for minimizing tossing and turning as they are also improving your overall comfort. Each of these Sealy mattresses are naturally free of allergy-causing chemicals, mold resistant and antimicrobial.

Spring flowering bulbs that are rather small and those that are unprotected by any kind of a husk or covering should be planted as soon as possible. This is particularly true of the winter aconite (Eranthis). Many of these dry out so quickly that if kept until late October or November they will be so shriveled that they do not give you the results the catalogs promised.

Some of the small ones that you will particularly enjoy are the many different kinds of crocus, both spring and fall blooming, grape hyacinths, snowdrops, glory-of-the-snow (Chionodoxa), species of wild tulips, guinea hen flowers (Fritillaria meleagris), bulbous irises such as reticulata and Danfordi and the various squills. Since many of these are early blooming and rather small, plant them where you can enjoy them from the windows of your home or see them as you go in and out of doors.

We get great enjoyment from the dozens of kinds of these little bulbs in the wall garden just back of our home. As they are a couple of feet above the ground we don’t have to get down on our knees to see and appreciate them.

News About Lilies

Have you kept up with the progress on lilies? It’s been tremendous. Some that you may have overlooked are the many varieties of current hybrids. These are in yellows, oranges and reds, some upright flowered, some with flowers facing sideways, some hanging down. They will grow from two to about three feet in height and will bloom in June. And a little later will come the modern forms of regal lilies called Olympic hybrids. They are larger flowered and more showy than the original regals. For July blooming try some of the many Aurelian hybrids. Some of them are similar to one of their parents – Henryi; others go over to the other parents – a white trumpet lily. And there is everything under the sun in between, they are tall, usually four to six feet in height, in yellows, oranges, and salmons, some curved petaled, some trumpets, some fragrant, some not fragrant. They are wonderful. And now there are hybrids of the regals that are yellow or pink. Just like lilies, philodendrons have also many varieties for example is the philodendron prince of orange.

Send away for the catalog or search online for one of the lily specialists and “blow yourself away.” Remember, lily bulbs are perishable; don’t put them away in the kitchen pantry and say “I will plant them next week.” If you can’t plant them today put them in damp peat moss in the refrigerator, and plant them just as soon as you possibly can.

We’ve created an excellent resource for you on the topic of philodendron prince of orange.

We may not see it at first, but our asphalt-paved driveway can experience corrosion over time. What seems like a couple of minor cracks that are barely noticeable can turn into large cracks if left in disrepair.

Leaving the asphalt paving in our driveways or walkways unprotected with some kind of sealant could result to this kind of damage which will prove to be more costly to replace in the future.

This is where sealcoating comes into play.

SEALCOATING ASPHALT DRIVEWAYS

Asphalt is the type of paving whose components change in with weather changes. When under extreme heat like in summertime; it can render the asphalt tender which could change its form; while in cold weather as in cold season; it can turn brittle, which may result in the developing of cracks.

With this information, there is one thing that needs to be done and that is to sealcoat the asphalt. Sealcoating is a preventive measure to protect the properties of the asphalt over a longer period of time.

It might be a tiresome task but the benefits far outweigh any work that we need to do in order to preserve the quality of the asphalt.

Sealcoating can restore the patina of the asphalt; enhance its resistance against toxic chemicals and weather conditions; giving it an extended lifespan which means savings in the future.

With this kind of protective measure, we can be sure that our asphalt will be kept in good shape for a couple of years; after which, we can simply apply the sealcoating technique again to recondition it.

USING SEALCOAT

The best thing about sealcoat is that we don’t have to hire an expert to do the job for us. We can easily do this ourselves which could again save us money.

Generally, we have to keep the asphalt from dirt and other debris; if there are gaps we also have to mend the gaps with the proper asphalt filler; and then we’re ready to begin with the sealcoating.

There are sealcoat mixtures available in the market which come with directions in them so it will be easy for us to come up with the right mixture. After we have applied the first coat; a second one is necessary.

We should let the sealcoating dry for about 24 hours.

Mr. Robert Devalt is interested in different types of paving and writes about sealcoating equipment and much more on his website Paving Land. If you have any questions about paving, you must take a minute with Robert.

Which comes first – the vine, or the support it grows on? Sometimes one, sometimes the other; but ideally, both together. Whether it’s an expensive pergola or a simple wire netting, no support should be either so elaborate or so out of proportion that it is in discord with the rest of the garden and the architecture. And unless the vine is in tune with all three, it does more aesthetic harm than good. A vine is only as effective as it is suited to its supporting structure, and the reverse.

Design-wise, supports and structures of all kinds should be kept on the simple side, conforming – not competing – with the architecture of the house or other buildings. Painting the supports the same color as the house helps tie the two together, with the vine to create the contrasting color and pattern. The best supports neither compete with their vines for attention nor outshine them.

Good construction is also important. A support should be strong enough from the start to bear the weight of the vine when it is fully mature – and even when it is whipped by strong wind. The bases of the support should be sunk below the frost line; and all wood, even durable cypress or redwood, should be treated with a rot-preventive. (Don’t use creosote or anything else that is poisonous to plants.) Copper nails and galvanized iron bolts also help make sure the whole thing won’t collapse when the vine has grown lush and heavy.

Most supports need periodic painting or refinishing. Plan ahead for this just like planning for the stages of tissue culture. Make the structure accessible; and train and prune the vine to keep it under control, so the stems can be removed and laid down without the job of unraveling a hopeless tangle, or even cutting the plant back to the soil.

For the sake of unity and balance in garden design, structures and supports need a reason for their appearance – to connect one building, area, or level with another; display a specimen or accent vine; keep the vine shapely and upright against a wall; lead the eye to an object of interest, like a fountain; integrate a restful bench or an outdoor living area with its surroundings.

When it comes to home building or remodeling, we particularly spend time to make both the interiors and outdoor parts of the homes as striking as possible. Having an appealing home both inside and out, can provide a glimpse of the tastes of the homeowners; thus, having a well-laid design is imperative.

Among the things that people will first notice about our homes is just how shiny it looks; as usually reflected in our floorings in major parts of the house as well as kitchen counter tops and bathroom counters.

A polished look makes any home look more inviting and cleaner, too.

POLISHED STONES

Polished stones are frequently utilized in floors both in homes and commercial structures. These are more attractive than regular paving and a majority of people find them more cost-efficient than other pavers available.

If we are thinking of building our homes or remodeling them, choosing to use polished stones will certainly work as they add to the overall impression that our homes create.

Nothing is more appealing than having these polished stones in place where the shiny quality of these can give us a a reflective feature.

There are many other applications for polished stones other than floorings and counters. They can also be used for hearths and fashion accessories!

There are many varieties of polished stones that we can use to complement the lay-out theme of our homes. These types of stones include granite, marble and limestone. They come in different finishes so it will be easy for us to figure out which one will best suit our interiors and exteriors.

KEEPING POLISHED STONES

While polished stones can increase the aesthetic value of our homes, they could be harder to keep than the usual floor pavers. It is best that we use a special type of sealant to lock in the polished quality of our stone paving.

Having the characteristic of absorbing liquid easily, the tint of polished stones could become faded and stained if they are often come into contact with any kind of liquid. It is hence of utmost importance that we wipe off spills the instant they happen.

Color, texture, structural form, and areas of space are the implements of design, the materials of which it is composed. Here, there is no substitute for personal taste and creativity. Rules like those for the use of complementary or contrasting colors, the play of soft textures against hard are made only to be broken if the effect is carefully conceived and executed.

Your patio planters, for example, may present a striking picture because they contain flowers in assorted brilliant colors; next door, your neighbor may use only shades of pink and white for equal pleasure. Even a combination of shades of green can be enticing, particularly if textures and light or shadow are used in some original manner.

Using Vines Decoratively

Effective decorating, then, begins with the elements of good design. But with the addition of your own discrimination and originality, the fun begins. Before using vines and hanging plants for indoor or outdoor decoration, try to visualize the whole picture – the room or wall, or the whole garden area. Try to “see” in your mind all elements in relation to each other and to the situation. Then, select plants and containers that suit your intention and create the picture you have in mind.

To demonstrate some basic principles of design, create some abstract shapes to represent various elements – a rectangle might be a bookcase against a wall; a small square could be the vine in a bracket above it; a long, thin shape might be a vine trained horizontally, or hanging or climbing vertically. The whole area might be the wall of a room or of a garden. Cutting out similar shapes and moving them about within an area in proportionate scale may help you visualize any effect you want to create.

These design principles are applied or adapted to using vines decoratively indoors (interior decoration), outdoors (landscaping), and in the specific category of container gardening.

Because plants are decorative only if they are well grown and healthy, it is important to provide the right cultural practices for vines and cycad plant in pots, baskets, planters, containers, and in the garden. These are general principles; specific culture for specific vines may need to be addressed for certain plants. Methods of propagating vines and combating insects and disease is also an issue which needs to be addressed.

Visit www.plant-care.com and search the web for cultural information on hardiness that should help determine whether each vine is considered an indoor or outdoor plant in any or all of the widely varying climates across the country. What’s grown indoors in Boston may likely flourish outdoors the year round in Tallahassee; some plants that enjoy cool Northwestern summers can’t take the heat in southern Texas; and those that need protracted below-freezing temperatures to force them into a restful dormancy would pine away where a warm climate keeps them growing all the time.

Also for each vine or group of vines should have some general suggestions on the suitable type of indoor or outdoor decoration – hanging baskets, container-garden accents, shades or screens over arches and pergolas, for example.

In the south shrub and tree planting projects are about to get under way. Everywhere people are beginning to recognize the economic and aesthetic values of shrubs and trees. This is particularly true of trees. Large producers of forest products are planting vast acreages with trees; the owners of woodland plots are utilizing every available acre; and the occupants of even the smallest lots in new developments are planting young trees of various kinds.

When I recently visited the state forest tree nursery, I learned that the more than sixteen million seedlings grown last season did not nearly meet the demand.

Our towns and cities are growing so fast, they are literally bursting their seams. Real estate developers have to reach far out beyond the suburbs, taking in large areas where there are either no trees to start with or where, in the process of preparing for construction, it is necessary to remove most, if not all, of the trees. Most builders and developers are apparently doing what they can to save the trees, but in many developments most trees ore sacrificed.

Fast-growing trees for the home – Fortunately there are several fast-growing trees well adapted to planting around the Southern home. A lot, after being planted with a few of these trees, will soon lose its bareness and also be considerably shaded from the hot sun.

Mimosa – One of the best is the mimosa, but in some areas it is subject to a wilt that causes the tree to lose its leaves and finally die. There seems to be no cure for the disease. Your only safety is to procure trees grown in a disease-free area.

Chinese parasol-tree – This species, known botanically as Firmiana simplex, is a large-leaved, tropical-looking small tree that grows rapidly to 25 or 30 feet, but then stops at that height. It has large heads of interesting cream-colored flowers, followed by bladder-like seed pods.

Goldenrain-tree – Another fast-growing small tree well suited to the small lot is the goldenrain-tree (Koelreuteria paniculata). Its compound leaves and great profusion of small yellow flowers add to its attractiveness. Unfortunately, neither the Chinese parasol-tree nor the goldenrain-tree is easily had from nurseries, as only a few concerns in the South handle them.

Chinese elm – For the larger lot, where a mature tree 45 feet high would be in scale, the Chinese elm is a good choice. It grows rapidly, thrives in poor soil and endures much dry weather.

Dogwood and redbud – Two native trees that are lovely and fit well into any home landscape or backyard landscape ideas are the dogwood and the redbud. We can hardly have too many of them. Many of the numerous tree-planting projects sponsored by garden and civic clubs have featured these two trees, and as a result tens of thousands of them have been planted in the South during the last five years. In a few years they will transform many of our now-uninteresting streets and roadways into avenues of great beauty.

Red maple – The red maple is another medium-sized tree that is well suited to home-grounds planting in the South.

Pine – The native pines continue in strong demand for planting on home grounds in the South. We did not realize how very rapidly these trees grew until we began growing them under cultivation. A pine’s growth is comparatively slow in the forest, but on the home grounds, where it is fed and watered, it is rather exciting. If you are planting for heavy shade, loblolly pine is preferable to slash or yellow pine.

A guide for first year decorating

A guide for first year decorating

Last year was a particular busy one for you and doing outdoor light decorating just wasn’t in the cards then. But now, you feel this year is the one to join in a little holiday joy and display it on your property. If you need some advice, there is no end to the professionals in the lighting profession who will be delighted to get you started in the right direct. They can get you set up with everything you’ll need, from extension cords to the actual lights you decide on.

Whether you have a small or a large home, there is an outdoor lighting idea perfect for your application. Some people who just begin decorating their property start somewhat small and add to the effect each year. Others are determined to have the best looking decorated house in the neighborhood and go “all out” with their choices. If you’re one of those who will start small, why not choose a spotlight directed at the special wreath on your front door. Sometimes, two spotlights are used, one in green and one in white for a dramatic effect.

Ideas for your first Outdoor Lighting project

If you would like to accentuate your front stoop or porch, a small lighted tree in a beautiful planter or holder is very special. Sometimes just the front porch light on this particular decoration is enough to emphasize the display.

You will probably want to have a lighted Santa Claus in your front yard for their enjoyment, or perhaps a Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer. Small children get so excited over this sign that Christmas is arriving soon. And, as they come on again each evening, the little squeals of delight continue. A lot of people agree that “Christmas” is for children. When it comes to Santa Claus it certainly is.

Equipment to shop for

Most everyone chooses to put their light display on a timer so that at a specified time each night, around dusk, the lights come on, and at a time that you select, they automatically turn off at night. This can serve as a good security measure as well. No one will know whether you or home or not. This is a great feature if you plan to be away at Grandma’s for a couple of days/

One good thing about the second year you decorate, all you need to do is gather everything from the year before and you’ll know exactly where to begin. And especially with children, you won’t forget to decorate; they’re sure to ask you about it early on. Have fun with them!

A simple and affordable way to improve your residential lighting devices could be to switch from incandescent bulbs to Ceiling Fan Lights for your regular lamps. One compact fluorescent light (CFL) could pay for itself in about 6 months, and next, go on to conserve about $30 in light bills in the course of its lifetime. CFLs need 75 percent fewer watts than an old fashioned bulb, and could last about 10 times longer.

CFLs need much less electricity because of the way they create light. Incandescent bulbs include a current that travels inside a wire filament and heats that filament until it begins to glow. That amber filament glow is what results in incandescent light. Alternately, a CFL sends an electric current into a tube that holds argon and mercury vapor. The current heats the gas, which then reacts with a fluorescent layer inside the tube. That particularly excited layer is what causes the visible fluorescent glow. CFLs need somewhat more energy when they are first turned on, so these light bulbs incorporate a ballast to kick start the CFL and then regulate the current to keep light on.

The mercury vapor inside a compact fluorescent bulb is required so it will function, although mercury is a hazardous material which people should not allow to contaminate a house or the landfill. How could we effectively address this problem? Well, for starters, CFLs contain only about 4 miligrams of mercury per bulb, and this mercury is not leaked from the bulb as long as they are in one piece or being used. As a matter of fact, the only time that mercury could be leaked from the fluorescent tube is if the bulb were to be broken, in advance of or during the discarding process, that’s why you need good Ceiling Light Fixtures.

As long as consumers are following proper cleanup and disposal process when handling CFLs, the amount of electricity saved particularly overwhelms any theoretical injury to the planet. The simple point of using less electricity means that using CFLs can reduce the level of mercury which is discharged by power plants. For that matter, if every American household switched merely one old fashioned bulb with a CFL, the power electricity conserved could be enough to light 3 million houses.

Used CFLs should be thrown out employing existing local recycling options. If your municipal landfill does not have a recycling procedure for fluorescent bulbs, then busted or used bulbs should be wrapped in two plastic bags and placed in an exterior trash canister to await pickup.

The initial investment in a Ceiling Fan Light Fixtures is quite a bit higher than the price of an incandescent bulb, yet the extended working life and the projected energy savings more than make up for the price difference. CFLs use mercury, which could be damaging to the ecosystem, but if stored and thrown away properly, the environmental impact of the mercury is insignificant compared to the power conservation potential. By and large, the benefits of using CFLs far outweigh the potential problems, so why not change your light bulbs? This week?
