Some Simple Ideas To Make Your Home Look More Attractive

October 7th, 2009 No comments

Increasing your home’s lighting is the quickest and easiest way to make your home look brighter and sell faster. So, if you want to make your home more appealing with the simple flick of a switch, install bulbs with the maximum wattage your fixtures will safely allow and turn on all the lights.

Both interior and exterior lighting is important. So, choose the right lighting fixtures for your home and make it look more beautiful.

The first thing that anyone will notice about your home will be it’s exterior part. So, it must be well lit. Always make sure to keep the lighting fixtures clean from dust so that maximum light can be produced. You can also go for some low-voltage accent lights around the garden or driveway.

Your front entrance and the hallway must be well lit. You can go for high- wattage bulbs for that area as it is the main entrance so good lighting is required for safety and security purposes as well. If you have some artwork, you can use recessed or pot lights to highlight it. Painting the walls with light colors and adding mirrors is a good idea to make the area look bright and open.

Another important area in home is a kitchen. Now a days it is used for many different activities apart from just cooking food. So, always illuminate your kitchen nicely to make it a more pleasant place. You can use spot lights on some special features. You can also go for recessed ceiling lights. Task lights are very important in kitchen. Like, you can place them over the counter tops or over the stove so that you can perform the task without any troubles. Accent lights over the kitchen table will look good.

If a room or an area is well lit, it makes it look larger. So, try to have arrangements for natural light as well. Like, keep the window shades and curtains open during the day time and also make sure that the lighting is shadow free.

Ensure table lamps have 40- or 60-watt bulbs with attractive, translucent shades that cast a nice glow for entertaining or reading. Add a couple of non-scented candles for extra ambiance.

Theres nothing worse than a dingy looking bathroom, so make sure the room has sufficient lighting — especially over the tub, shower and vanity mirror. Use fluorescent bulbs with a color rendering index (CRI) of 80 or more to enhance skin tones and other colors. A night-light is also an inexpensive way to add a nice warm glow.

A well planned lighting design is very essential for each and every room of the house including the bathrooms. Many homeowners think why to spend much on bathroom lighting when it is not being used as much as other rooms. But, it is important to light up the bathrooms well because it becomes easy and safe to walk in and look for any thing and secondly it will give you a more pleasant and a relaxed feeling.

If the design of your bathroom lets in a lot of natural light, you need only consider lighting arrangements for after-dark hours. In other cases, you may have to use a combination of natural and artificial light sources, to light up your bathroom. You can find a wide range in halogen and standard incandescent lights in the market. Go for the ones that are nice and bright and as close as possible to natural sunlight.

By using light fixtures with dimmer control, you can change the intensity of the light to get just the right relaxing feel. Dimmers are also energy-savers and your bulbs will last longer. Just keep in mind that you need incandescent dimmers for incandescent and halogen lights and compatible dimmers for any other types of lights.

Normally, a well-lit bathroom will incorporate the following types of artificial light arrangements ” ambient lighting, accent lighting and task lighting.

Ambient lighting is the general lighting and the main purpose is to illuminate the over all space. You can go for a chandelier for a more fancy look. You can also have a number of small but bright lights along the walls of a bathroom. Recessed lights will also look good there.

Accent lighting, as the name suggests, draws attention to a specific area or feature of the bathroom. You can use it to highlight things like an ornate mirror or an artwork or a decorative wash-basin or beautiful tiling.

Task lights are for letting you perform the task comfortably. A bathroom is used for grooming, applying make up etc. So, place the task lights on the either sides of the mirror so that the shadow effect is minimized and you can complete the job without straining your eyes.

Last but not the least, keep safety factors in mind when installing your bathroom light fixtures. Hire a qualified electrician to do the actual installing and always use fixtures and lights specifically intended for use in wet areas. Place light fixtures at least 6 feet away from the bathtub or shower.
