Pruning and spraying trees and shrubs can begin now that deciduous trees and shrubs have lost their leaves. Of course, spring-flowering shrubs such as lilac and forsythia should not be touched now; they should be pruned after they flower.

Although dormant oil sprays are usually not applied until early spring, they can actually be used on any sunny day during the winter when the temperature promises to stay above 40 for eight hours or more.

Transplanting – Fall transplanting can be continued as long as the soil can be worked easily. The later the planting is done, however, the more necessary it is to have a mulch over the roots.

If a tree is not too large, it is sometimes practical for the homeowner to move it with a frozen ball. Trench around the tree now so that frost can get deep into the ground. Don’t undercut the ball until you are ready to move the tree.

Caring for your lawn – Remember that heavy traffic on the lawn is damaging, even when the ground is frozen. There may be dead turf by spring.

Apply a turf fungicide now to areas which were troubled with snow mold last winter. Another way to discourage this disease is to keep leaves and grass clippings from collecting on the turf.

Propagating shrubs – As soon as the wood is hard, but before heavy freezing occurs, take hardwood cuttings of your shrubs. Store them in sand or slightly dampened sphagnum moss until spring.

Planting spring bulbs – If your nursery or garden center is still selling good sound spring-flowering bulbs such as daffodils and tulips, don’t be discouraged from buying them because you think the planting season is past. As long as the soil can be worked there’s still time to plant.

Storing garden tools – After cleaning the garden tools, lawn mower and hose, put them under cover for the winter. Wash out the sprayer and store it upside down with the top off.

Encouraging the birds to winter in Hie garden – Keep the birds around your garden if possible by providing food and water for them. Many winter birds pay their way by eating insects.

Protecting the garden for the winter – From now on protection for the roses is an absolute must just like ficus tree care. Hill up fresh soil around the base of each bush. Wait until after a sharp freeze to mulch the strawberries and perennials, or mice may move into the mulch.

Inspecting vegetables in storage – From time to time examine stored vegetables. Leafy vegetables such as cabbage and endive are prone to rot.

Sowing hardy annuals – All hardy annuals can be sown in the fall. In many parts of the Middle West fall sowing is the only way to produce good plants of such cool-weather annuals as Shirley poppies, larkspurs and calendulas. Just before the ground freezes for the winter, broadcast the seed on well-prepared soil. The seed will remain dormant until spring, then will start into growth long before the soil can be worked.

Color, texture, structural form, and areas of space are the implements of design, the materials of which it is composed. Here, there is no substitute for personal taste and creativity. Rules like those for the use of complementary or contrasting colors, the play of soft textures against hard are made only to be broken if the effect is carefully conceived and executed.

Your patio planters, for example, may present a striking picture because they contain flowers in assorted brilliant colors; next door, your neighbor may use only shades of pink and white for equal pleasure. Even a combination of shades of green can be enticing, particularly if textures and light or shadow are used in some original manner.

Using Vines Decoratively

Effective decorating, then, begins with the elements of good design. But with the addition of your own discrimination and originality, the fun begins. Before using vines and hanging plants for indoor or outdoor decoration, try to visualize the whole picture – the room or wall, or the whole garden area. Try to “see” in your mind all elements in relation to each other and to the situation. Then, select plants and containers that suit your intention and create the picture you have in mind.

To demonstrate some basic principles of design, create some abstract shapes to represent various elements – a rectangle might be a bookcase against a wall; a small square could be the vine in a bracket above it; a long, thin shape might be a vine trained horizontally, or hanging or climbing vertically. The whole area might be the wall of a room or of a garden. Cutting out similar shapes and moving them about within an area in proportionate scale may help you visualize any effect you want to create.

These design principles are applied or adapted to using vines decoratively indoors (interior decoration), outdoors (landscaping), and in the specific category of container gardening.

Because plants are decorative only if they are well grown and healthy, it is important to provide the right cultural practices for vines and cycad plant in pots, baskets, planters, containers, and in the garden. These are general principles; specific culture for specific vines may need to be addressed for certain plants. Methods of propagating vines and combating insects and disease is also an issue which needs to be addressed.

Visit www.plant-care.com and search the web for cultural information on hardiness that should help determine whether each vine is considered an indoor or outdoor plant in any or all of the widely varying climates across the country. What’s grown indoors in Boston may likely flourish outdoors the year round in Tallahassee; some plants that enjoy cool Northwestern summers can’t take the heat in southern Texas; and those that need protracted below-freezing temperatures to force them into a restful dormancy would pine away where a warm climate keeps them growing all the time.

Also for each vine or group of vines should have some general suggestions on the suitable type of indoor or outdoor decoration – hanging baskets, container-garden accents, shades or screens over arches and pergolas, for example.

A simple and affordable way to improve your residential lighting devices could be to switch from incandescent bulbs to Ceiling Fan Lights for your regular lamps. One compact fluorescent light (CFL) could pay for itself in about 6 months, and next, go on to conserve about $30 in light bills in the course of its lifetime. CFLs need 75 percent fewer watts than an old fashioned bulb, and could last about 10 times longer.

CFLs need much less electricity because of the way they create light. Incandescent bulbs include a current that travels inside a wire filament and heats that filament until it begins to glow. That amber filament glow is what results in incandescent light. Alternately, a CFL sends an electric current into a tube that holds argon and mercury vapor. The current heats the gas, which then reacts with a fluorescent layer inside the tube. That particularly excited layer is what causes the visible fluorescent glow. CFLs need somewhat more energy when they are first turned on, so these light bulbs incorporate a ballast to kick start the CFL and then regulate the current to keep light on.

The mercury vapor inside a compact fluorescent bulb is required so it will function, although mercury is a hazardous material which people should not allow to contaminate a house or the landfill. How could we effectively address this problem? Well, for starters, CFLs contain only about 4 miligrams of mercury per bulb, and this mercury is not leaked from the bulb as long as they are in one piece or being used. As a matter of fact, the only time that mercury could be leaked from the fluorescent tube is if the bulb were to be broken, in advance of or during the discarding process, that’s why you need good Ceiling Light Fixtures.

As long as consumers are following proper cleanup and disposal process when handling CFLs, the amount of electricity saved particularly overwhelms any theoretical injury to the planet. The simple point of using less electricity means that using CFLs can reduce the level of mercury which is discharged by power plants. For that matter, if every American household switched merely one old fashioned bulb with a CFL, the power electricity conserved could be enough to light 3 million houses.

Used CFLs should be thrown out employing existing local recycling options. If your municipal landfill does not have a recycling procedure for fluorescent bulbs, then busted or used bulbs should be wrapped in two plastic bags and placed in an exterior trash canister to await pickup.

The initial investment in a Ceiling Fan Light Fixtures is quite a bit higher than the price of an incandescent bulb, yet the extended working life and the projected energy savings more than make up for the price difference. CFLs use mercury, which could be damaging to the ecosystem, but if stored and thrown away properly, the environmental impact of the mercury is insignificant compared to the power conservation potential. By and large, the benefits of using CFLs far outweigh the potential problems, so why not change your light bulbs? This week?

Dutch Iris are one of the most colorful of all fall-planted bulbs. They have been propagated heavily in Oregon and Washington for the Pacific Coast market. The flower is excellent for cutting and a generous crop may be expected. The colors include white, yellow, lavender, blue and purple. The plants are fairly hardy although they require some protection if planted in a windy spot. Plant in the open sun or semi-shade with the bulbs. 3 inches deep and 3 inches apart. Average garden soil will suffice and the bulbs should not be disturbed until the plants become so thick that the clumps need dividing.

Aftercare of Bulbs – Many – including gladiolus, tigridias and tuberous begonias – should be taken up now and stored for a good rest. Remember, the foliage should be thoroughly ripened before cutting off. Dust the bulbs with an insecticide to take care of any insect eggs present. Also, all bulbs and tubers should be dried off thoroughly before storing in peat. Guard against mice eating tigridias especially.

For quick color – In the mild sections of the West, snapdragons, stocks, annual chrysanthemums, larkspur, Iceland poppies, violas and pansies may still be set out, although the blooms will be later than on those set out last month. For shady spots, try cinerarias and primroses.

Wildflowers – Sow seeds after the first heavy rains. For dependable ground covers on bulb beds, sow linaria, brachycome, Gilia lutea (G. micrantha), nemophila, Virginia stock, Johnny-jump-up and other shallow-rooted annuals. These make colorful beds by themselves and are a boon both to the busy gardener pressed for time and the “lazy” gardener.

Winter pot plants – For the shaded patio use primrows, cinerarias, pansies, daffodils, browallias, reinwardtias, alocasia amazonica, beloperones, ericas, eranthemums, azaleas and camellias.

Pyracanthus and cotoneasters are the answer for time-pressed gardening enthusiasts who require colorful berries with a minimum of time spent on upkeep. Berried shrubs thrive here in the West. Although they can be planted at any season, this is a good time to select choice kinds at local nurseries, for now you can not only choose the ones with the best forms but also the proper colored berries.

Join Thomas Fryd at http://www.plant-care.com as he continues to explore more effective ways on alocasia amazonica.

Like cut-flower arrangements, making table-top compositions with vines and all kinds of containers offers a challenging chance to express originality and creative artistry. But behind the creativity there should always be planned design. Combinations of plants and containers should be in proportion and harmony with their setting and with each other. Colors and textures should either blend or contrast for good reason. Sizes and shapes should be in pleasing scale. It’s easy to see, at first glance, whether a table-top arrangement has made its appearance because the plant and container happened to be on hand, or whether the effect was artfully conceived.

There is infinite satisfaction in creating a composition that is both unique and decoratively sound. This is “flair,” the indefinable quality that distinguishes the competent from the outstanding, avoids the ordinary but acknowledges a debt to artistic discipline. Flair is the happy result when new plants and unusual containers are combined so they complement each other and fit nicely into the setting.

Vines for small compositions can be used like bouquets for temporary display – either bought just for the purpose, or brought in from the home greenhouse or other growing area, and returned before they fade. Containers come from everywhere and anywhere, and the ingenious decorator collects them as some people collect Dresden figurines. She keeps a selection of bronze, brass, ceramic, terra cotta, wood, and other standard containers – and also a motley assortment of bird cages, soup tureens, goblets, compotes, pitchers, bamboo vases, bean pots, glass and salad bowls, kettles, cookie jars, and straw hats from which she improvises containers to suit her arrangements. Some have natural wells for a pot to fit into, others can be adapted.

The following suggestions include only a few of the delightful dangling and creeping plants suitable for table-top or other small decorations.

Suspend a basket or wicker cage with plumy asparagus fern, or davallia, over the center of a large dining table.

Stuff the pocket in a piece of driftwood with sphagnum moss, and insert the roots of a small rhizomatous or trailing begonia, or an episcia. Feed the plant by soaking the moss with soluble fertilizer solution every ten days.

Hide the base of a stiff, upright plant with a soft creeper like helxine or pilea.

Below the knocker on the front door, hang a fishing creel with a bright-flowering pot of balcony petunias or put a mass cane plant in a pot on the floor.

For a party centerpiece, let the dainty schizocentron spill its red stems, tiny leaves, and magenta flowers over the edge of a straw bonnet.

Have you recently decided to take on the task of landscape design and implementation? If you have, I am here to offer helpful tips. Put careful consideration in your landscape design, you want to make sure it will suit you as well as your home. Your climate is a big consideration as well; some flowers and plants do not grow in certain climates.

There are of course professionals that you can hire to do this job for you, if you choose. Either way your landscape will be beautiful after it has undergone the transformation. Depending on the size of your project, you may need help to finish it. If so, there are a number of landscape designers on the Internet at very reasonable prices. You would only need to research a few companies and find the one that you feel comfortable with. These companies will work right along side you to give you what you want.

Take time to consider all the factors involved if you have decided to go ahead with the project yourself. Making a map of your land can help. You should include all property lines, roads, driveways, and paths. Be sure to add your garage, outbuildings of any kind and your home. Adding the lawn entrance and plants or garden areas could be useful as well.

Once you have this map, or checklist you will then need to start designing your landscape. You will need to decide on many things while doing this. Take care to include all the aspects that you want to have in your landscape. You of course can change your plans at any time or even after it has been implemented. Landscapes can grow and change with you, therefore if you want to add or take away at a latter time that is quite possible to do.

You may want to add certain things that you enjoy in your life, such as a path or two if you like to take strolls. You can even add a patio for cook outs if that is what you enjoy doing. You may enjoy ponds or water fountains these things can all be added.

After deciding what features you want to include such as; patios, walkways, water features it is then time to decide where they should go. You will then need to determine if you wish to have electricity points for lighting through out or in certain areas, or even not at all. This will help take care of the bigger elements that may be hard to change later on.

After you have decided on the types of flowers, shrubs, and trees you wish to use in your landscape the last step is the implementation of it all. This is where you put it all together and make that wonderful landscape you have been dreaming about. This is not an easy or quick task. You may decide at this point to bring in professionals, either way once it is all put together you have designed and implemented your landscape.

Everyone will love your yard after getting some help from your local gardener that can help you with all of your yard and garden needs including irrigation and drainage systems.

The final decision as to what type of garden you will want is not reached at the snap of a finger, but can be achieved in one of two ways. The first, and most businesslike, is to write down all pertinent facts and figures concerning yourself, your family, the size of your property, the size of your house, its exposure, etc. The other, which is just as workable but perhaps a little more confusing and likely to cause you undue worry, is simply to carry your ideas around in your head and finally try to put them on paper in the form of a plan. These are not solutions of your problem but rather helpful guides.

The more orderly method is to make a check list and to give our thought reality we shall consider the requirements of a family living in a development of identical houses in Central New Jersey. Their check list should be used as a guide in making your own.

Topography – Fairly level Exposure – South ( that is, front of house faces south) Location – Central New Jersey Design of garden – Informal Existing vegetation ( trees and shrubs ) – None Garage – Single, attached Soil – Sandy loam, well drained Neighboring properties – Houses on both sides Age of owners – early 30’s Family – Father, mother, and three young children Parents like to work in garden Parents also like to relax in and enjoy the garden, and plan to entertain extensively out-of-doors. Size of property-75 x 125 feet Budget – calls for an expenditure of $750 a year for 6 years.

Analyzing the List

It is obvious that since this family intends to spend a great deal of time relaxing and entertaining their friends out-of-doors they will need a larger than average private area. The rough sketch will include ovals on the basic plot plan the majority of space in the area behind the house is labeled private.

Since the majority of space is devoted to this area, it is obvious that the service area must necessarily be small, perhaps just large enough to provide a few fresh vegetables and flowers that do not require too much care. The completed plan of a garden should serve our hypothetical family well. It provides them with a vast outdoor living room that will be excellent for entertaining and just enough service area to provide tomatoes, string beans, radishes, and flowers.

Now let us consider a neighboring family in similar circumstances who do not plan extensive outdoor entertainment. In their case the service area could be greatly expanded at the expense of the private area. The service area may occupy better than half the space behind the house is sufficiently large to provide all sorts of fresh vegetables and cut and specimen flowers, while the private area, though small, remains large enough to meet the relaxation needs of the family.

Give a great deal of thought and attention to compiling your own check list. Never fail to consider your future as well as your present requirements; plan your garden in such a way that it will mature to fit all your needs with a, minimum expenditure of time, effort, and money. Just like caring for spider mites on plants.

Since our list has shown us how to determine the relative sizes of the public, private, and service areas, we are now ready to begin developing the individual areas. Your next step is to consider each particular area and proceed to mold it into actuality.

To the neat gardener mulberry might be a nuisance with its messy berries dropping on the ground and purple mulberry splashings on the bird bath, but it is a joy to birds. At least fifty-two varieties of birds delight in the fruit of the mulberry, which lasts from June until September.

June is a happy month for birds as well as humans, the month of long sunny days and fragrant nights when the honeysuckle perfumes the night breeze and the song sparrow wakes to sing a sleepy serenade to the summer moon.

And whenever honeysuckle is mentioned one usually thinks of the common Japanese honeysuckle that climbs over porches and fences. This will take the place over unless sternly kept in check. Within the dense growth catbirds or chipping sparrows locate their nests, and in winter the visiting white-throated sparrows make their headquarters in the shelter of the nearly evergreen foliage.

The viburnums, with their flat clusters of flowers which later develop into berries in the fall, attract the birds. Arrow-wood has dark blue fruit, and sheep-berry, also called nanny-berry, has showy flower clusters nearly 5 inches across followed by blue berries that are both sweet and edible.

Handsomest of the viburnums is the cranberry-bush, sometimes referred to as high-bush cranberry. The large clusters of bright red berries among freshly green leaves are a fine sight in autumn. According to old botanical texts the cranberries make an “agreeable jelly,” but to make this jelly one will have to race with the birds, who make them disappear as fast as the dogwood berries.

The leaves of the cranberry-bush seem impervious to frost. Long after other shrubs are dried and shriveled the cranberry-bush is still a summer-like green. Sometimes you think it has forgotten about winter.

Many of our popular shrubs and perennials like hibiscus plants are native plants that have been brought under cultivation. Sometimes the process is reversed and a shrub escapes from the confines of the garden to make its way to the wilds where it leads its own life and gets on in the world without benefit of such items as pruning shears and fertilizer.

Such is the snowberry’s career. From a prim orderly existence in old-fashioned gardens it wandered into the great outdoors, and there it has managed to survive among its less sheltered relatives of the honeysuckle family. The little round white berries, like tiny snowballs or camphor balls, are not eaten by birds as fast as the cranberry or dogwood berries; eventually, however, they too go, especially after they become a little droopy and brown and when more desirable fruit is no longer available to the hungry birds.

In Northern United States and Canada

Now is the time to check out seed catalogs and online along with placing orders. Early in the month sow seeds of Clarkia, Godedia, Larkspur, Stocks and other annuals for Spring bloom in the greenhouse. Toward the end of January sow in the greenhouse Wax Begonias, Lobelias, Vinca roses, Delphiniums and Pansies for Summer bloom outdoors…

Remove pots of bulbs, such as Hyacinths, Daffodils and Tulips, that are to be forced for early bloom, a few at a time, from the cool basement or sand bed outdoors where they have been rooting, and bring them into the greenhouse or house. Shade them for the first few days and give them lots of water at all times. Keep them cool at first; increase the temperature gradually.

As soon as dormant potted Amaryllis bulbs show signs of life, remove a little of the old surface soil, replace with rich new soil, water thoroughly and place the pots in a warm, light location in the greenhouse or house. Pot new Amaryllis bulbs in well-drained pots of fertile sandy soil.

Disperse heavy accumulations of snow on evergreens by shaking the branches. Allow snow to remain on coldframes until it melts naturally. It provides good insulation. Branches of Christmas trees may be laid over evergreen perennials (such as Dianthus, Helianthemums and Candytuft) to give protection from sun and wind. Check tools and supplies now. Winter passes all too swiftly and with its end comes the immediate need for these. Make sure that the tools and implements you have are in good working condition. Buy whatever new ones you need. Also, make a list of the fertilizers, sprays and other supplies you will require and order them in.

In the South

Make sowings of annuals for early bloom either outdoors or in coldframes as soon as weather permits. In the lower South sow Carrots, Lettuce, Onions, Peas, Spinach and other hardy vegetable crops. Set out Cabbage plants and Onion sets. Plant Asparagus, Rhubarb and Horseradish. Proceed with preparing ground for later plantings. Almost all garden soils will benefit from having rotted manure, compost or other decayed organic matter incorporated into them.

Finish pruning Grapevines and complete the pruning of other fruits before new growth begins. Also, before new growth starts, apply dormant sprays to such fruit trees and ornamentals as need this treatment. Plant bulbs of Ranunculus, Tuberoses, Gerberas and Ismenes for Summer bloom. In the lower and middle South do not delay the planting of trees, shrubs, Gerberas, evergreens and Roses.

On the West Coast

Prune leaf-losing fruits and ornamentals that need this attention and complete this work before mid-February. Rose pruning should be done now in California. Attend to dormant spraying before new growth starts but not when night temperatures are likely to go below 35 degrees. In California gardens prepare plots for vegetables and make sowings of the hardiest kinds. Fertilize lawns and dig out patches of invading Bermuda Grass. Make early plantings of such bulbs and tubers as Begonias, Calla Lilies, Gladioli, Gloxinias and Tigridias. In southern California sow annuals, set out perennials and, following rains, plant trees and shrubs.

There are many concepts that you can use in your future landscaping Miami job. It all has to do on the purpose of the lawn, and the funds you have available to use. However, these are some ideas that you may think about before deciding on your next garden.

Before using any of the ideas in this essay, ensure that you have a limit to spend and that these concepts fall within your available budget. When thinking about the budget, you have to divide it into 2 parts. First, you must think about the cost of the initial job. Second, you have to think about how much it’s going to cost to up keep it. A job that has an initial high cost might be cheaper in the long term.

First, you might want to consider planting some larger trees. This is good in Florida area because of the heat. The trees will help your landscaping keep fresh and offer you with some additional privacy. However, keep in mind that you want to place the trees at a reasonable distance from the house because of potential hurricanes.

If you choose on using trees, plant trees with long roots so that they’ll remain up even if a hurricane going by your property. Flexible trees are in addition a good idea for a similar reason. To find this kind of trees, just search for the trees that are local to this area. You might also go to a local tree nursery and ask for expert help.

In addition, you may choose to consider placing fences or large plants around your property for privacy reasons. A good fence or wall might be more costly at the beginning but it is maintenance free. On the opposite side, tall plants are usually cheaper but require more maintenance. Tall plants are generally a better idea to have your landscaping look its best.

You might in addition consider leaving places with stones around flowers and trees. This is a good idea for different reasons. First, rocks offer you an elegant appearance. In addition, they help to limit the space of the trees. Also, rain might more easily get to the roots of the tree if it’s smaller stones around it. Finally, rocks are maintenance free.

If you prefer to make something simple and cheap to maintain, use a lot of grass. Grass has the additional advantage of being a great choice for families with smaller children because it offers them areas to run around.

Finally, you might think about including a water fountain in your Miami landscaping. Fountains offer a beautiful place to look at. In addition, they’re very cheap to maintain. Fountains provide in addition a nice smooth sound that helps individuals relax.

As proven in this essay, there are a lot of diverse different ideas you might do with your lawn. However, before thinking about your alternatives, make sure that you plan a set budget for the project. In the budget, consider the maintenance expenses associated with each choice. By doing your planning prior starting a landscaping Miami project, you’ll ensure that you end up with the kind of lawn that you fall in love with.
