Finding Just The Right Furniture

May 26th, 2009 No comments

Whether you are moving into a new home, or just giving your current living room an uplift, it’s important to give some serious thought to the way you want the room to look and feel. The way you choose to design and decorate a room can have a dramatic impact on the way the room feels and how it is used.

If you are giving the room a complete makeover and going for a whole new look you will want to decide what style you want for that room. Of course you’ll want to make sure it blends with the furnishings and feel of the rest of the house. But maybe you want to move to a slightly more modern look, or more of a traditional look, or something else.

If you are in a position where you can get new furniture you won’t have a hard time finding just the right look with the wide selection available these days. But if you happen to live in a less populated area with less choice easily available you might consider shopping online. Many quality companies can ship a sample of the wood or material so you can get a better idea of how it looks in person.

If you’re on a budget you might consider a few other options. You can refinish some of your existing furniture to give it a new look. If the idea of doing this yourself is intimidating look for someone in your area that does professionally or even as a hobby. You may also be able to talk to them for additional design ideas. But if you feel inspired to do the work yourself you might want to look at some do it yourself books or blogs as a reference.

Another good option if you’re on a budget is to find second hand furniture, or look for close out deals or store closing sales. If you’re willing to spend the time you can find some great deals on gently used furniture at garage sales, in classified ads, online or local postings. It may take a little more patience but you might be surprised at what you can find.

Evaluate both the dimensions and shape of the room you’re furnishing before you start looking for pieces of furniture. This will help you know what will and won’t work. For example a small room with large furniture will feel crowded and likely won’t be as useable.

You want to make the room feel like it’s laid out well and has a good flow. To accomplish this it’s good to evaluate what sizes and pieces of furniture will help achieve this while making the room usable. Think about the way the furniture will fit in the room while considering any obstacles like doors, windows and spaces that lead into another room.

One way to make sure all the pieces you want will fit in the room is to carefully measure the areas and put something like paper or newspaper in those areas so you can feel how things will fit and know what size of furniture to look for. For instance in a living room you may want to measure an area for a couch, end tables, a coffee table and a love seat to see what will fit and how it will feel.

Now you’re ready to start shopping. This is the fun part whether you’re looking at new or second hand; it’s still new and fresh to you.
