When you are seriously considering home improvement then you need to have a proper frame of mind in determining how you are going to go about it. One of the major decisions that you have to make is whether you are going to personally perform the task or hire the services of a professional.

It is critical for you to make the right decision and be able to know your limitations and the scope of the work at hand to avoid any complications while doing your home improvement projects. If you don’t feel confident in doing the project yourself then it is wise for you to seek the help of home improvement specialists.

Plastering is a technical skill that involves the application of plaster on ceilings and interior walls. This task is performed to ensure that these essential home structures are both soundproof and fireproof. You should also understand that this home improvement task is also performed in order to create specific designs and molds to enhance the aesthetic appeal of your home or commercial building.

Plastering is one task which may not be within your league. This construction trade generally entails plasterworks on walls and ceilings. Plastering tasks is also done in the interior as well as the exterior of homes and commercial buildings. Its primary purpose is to provide protection and ensure that your home or commercial building is fireproof and soundproof. Most people can do simple patch up jobs with ease. However, major plastering jobs, particularly those where intricate designs and special finishes are required, must be assigned to professional plaster contractors.

Plastering jobs are mostly defined by the skilful handling of plaster materials in order to protect essential structures as well as to enhance the aesthetic appeal of homes and commercial buildings. Plaster prevents the deterioration of walls and ceilings of our homes and commercial buildings as a result of exposure to damaging chlorides and sulphates. Professional plasterers also perform a highly specialized service of creating elegant finishes as well as molds and decorative designs out of plaster.

There are several types of plaster materials which are suited for specific types of wall and ceiling surfaces. The pure cement plaster is mainly used for external plastering. On the other hand, gypsum plaster is commonly used in the interior walls and ceilings. However, gypsum plaster will crumble down when applied on damp surfaces. For such surface condition, a thick layer of concrete plaster is more appropriate. Experts recommend that a thick layer of concrete plaster is applied on damp surfaces.

It is also important for you to know which types of plaster are suited for different types of ceiling and wall surfaces. The pure cement type of plaster is generally intended for exterior walls of homes and commercial buildings while the gypsum plaster is designed for internal plastering jobs. However, gypsum plaster must not be applied on damp surfaces as there is a high possibility that it will crumble. Instead, experts recommend that cement plaster be used in damp surfaces.

Plastering jobs should at least involve two layers of plaster coats. The initial layer shall serve as the backing of the plasterwork. A browning or bonding plaster coat is applied as the initial layers. You may also use plasterboard as alternative to plaster coat. The second layer shall serve as the finishing coat of the plasterwork. It primarily functions as the protective cover of the backing coat. Intricate designs and molds as well as other finishes are also done on this second layer in order to add to the aesthetic appeal of the home or commercial building.

There are two most common materials used in plastering – gypsum and lime plasters. Lime plaster was widely used in most plasterworks during the 19th century. Lime plaster is typically made out of lime, fiber, aggregate and water. Lime is usually derived from oyster shells and lime stones while hog or cattle hair is the fiber component used in the plaster mix.

Changes in the construction industry have led to the development of gypsum plaster as an alternative to lime plaster. Eventually, gypsum and lime plasters were also combined and used as a composite plastering material although gypsum slowly became the preferred plastering material for most tradesmen.

When constructing a house or building, the traditional practice of plasterers is to mix quick lime and water in order to hydrate the powder compound. As soon as the water is absorbed by the lime, heat is released. This is an indication that the chemical reaction has occurred and that the mixing process is complete. The resulting putty is then used a plastering material.

A coarse plaster is the result of the mixture of lime, water, sand and fiber. Plasterers apply one or two coats of this coarse plaster material in order to attain the desired thickness of walls. For best results, the normal practice is to use 3 layers of the plaster material. The initial two layers of the plaster material are the brown coat and scratch coat while the final layer is applied as the setting stuff of the plasterworks.

This final layer of the plasterwork uses a plaster mix that has a higher amount of lime putty and lesser amount of aggregate. Further, the plaster mix does not contain any fiber in order to attain a fine and smooth finish.

The first two layers are generally 3/8 inch thick while the finishing coat is only about 1/8 inch thick. Additives may be added to the final coat in order to achieve the desired quality of finish. The more common type of additives used in the final coat are marble dust and white sand. Plasterers also add small amount of plaster of Paris to shorten the setting time of the plaster material used for the third layer of the plasterworks.

Gypsum started to be used as a plastering material at the early parts of 1900s. One of the main advantages of gypsum is that it immediately reacts as soon as it makes contact with water. Gypsum as a plastering material also sets faster than lime plaster and its drying period is much shorter. Another upside of gypsum is that it is proven to be more rigid than lime. Unlike lime, gypsum plaster will not require fiber component in order to attain the binding effect needed in the plastering material.

Notwithstanding all of these distinct advantages of the plastering material, gypsum is prone to damage when exposed to moisture and damp conditions. Thus, lime plaster is more appropriate as plaster coating for masonry and when doing external plastering jobs.

It is crucial for us to properly understand and take into account the essential facts about lime plaster when deciding which type of plastering material to use in our home improvement projects. Most of us fail to appreciate the importance and suitability of lime plaster primarily because of the wrong notions and misconceptions about lime. For one, a lot of us mistakenly associate lime with Portland cement. This is grossly erroneous as these are completely two different products. In some cases, people tend to make the mistake of classifying any mortar with lime content as lime plaster. In view of this confusion, it is crucial for us to study the product and distinguish the facts from the myths.

Lime plaster can be created by mixing calcium hydroxide with an aggregate such as sand. This hydration product reacts with carbon dioxide and turns into calcium carbonate, which is basically limestone. This solidified form is what is attained when you use lime in your plasterworks. You can create a perfect lime plaster mix by properly combining the powder compound with the correct proportion of inert material such as sand. The solidification process is activated when the mixture makes contact with water.

The physical and chemical process can be altered with the addition of cement to the plaster mix. Adding cement to the plaster mix will result to significant changes in the colour, appearance, elasticity and porosity of the plaster. Thus, it is crucial for plasterers to carefully consider the correct proportion of cement and lime in their plastering material.

Lime is considered as a flexible and multi-functional type of material for plastering. It is a highly preferred plastering material for frescoes. Plasterers can usually attain the colouring in their plasterworks by adding the appropriate pigmentation material. This water soluble pigmentation element is usually applied on a freshly plastered and wet wall surface.

There are a lot of advantages when you use lime in your plasterworks. In the face of rapid industrialization, lime plaster comes out to be more a more beneficial option to the other types of plastering materials. Here are some of the major reasons why most plasterers prefer to use lime plaster over the other types of plastering materials.

Lime directly helps in the reduction of the amount of carbon dioxide that is released into the atmosphere. Scientific studies have shown that lime can account to as much as 80% of the total reduction of the carbon dioxide emission in the atmosphere. This means that if you are going to lime as your plastering material for an average-sized home unit, you can potentially prevent the release into the atmosphere an estimated 10,000 lbs of CO2.

Lime plaster has better elasticity than the other types of plastering material. Plasterers prefer to use lime as plastering material as it can be easily managed and worked on. Lime plaster has longer setting time compared to other plastering mix. Thus, you can easily adjust and correct your plasterwork before it finally sets. This distinct feature of lime plaster is very crucial as the setting and hardening process is irreversible and you will not be able to correct and work on the plaster once the process is complete.

Unlike cement plaster, lime plaster has longer setting time. It can easily adjust and adapt to the contours and other physical conditions of the surface of walls and ceilings. While the plaster dries and sets, any developing cracks are corrected without any intervention through the absorption of moisture from the atmosphere. As a result, you can easily attain a smooth and fine finish when you use lime plaster.

Before you can even decide to do any plaster repair, it is important that you are properly oriented and informed of the various alternatives in performing the plastering job. In most instances, DIY enthusiasts will have to go through a special training course on plastering before they will perform any kind of plastering work.

The most logical option for beginners to learn the proper way of doing plastering job is to enroll in special course program on plastering. However, you can also consider the other alternatives if you are looking at a simple patch up plastering job in the wall or ceiling of your home. It is essential for beginners to have an understanding and functional knowledge of plastering.

One of the more important aspects about the task is the proper understanding of the general properties of plaster. Plaster, just like with the ordinary concrete, is a type of hydration product. This means that once the plaster is mixed with water, a chemical reaction instantly occurs. This chemical process, once it begins, is irreversible. As soon as you mix the plaster with water, you will have to maintain a pace in your work so that you are able to finish the plastering before the plaster dries and permanently sets.

There are several powder compounds that you can use in plaster repair. These compounds have varying setting time and it is important for you to choose one that will suit the level of your competency in as far as repair of plaster is concerned. If you are a beginner, then it is not wise for you to use the compounds that are fast setting. You have to remember that the setting and drying process can not be reversed once these powder compounds are mixed with water.

Tiny holes in the plaster of your walls and ceilings can be easily repaired as long as the lath backing remains intact. Under such conditions, you will simply have to mix plaster of Paris with a joint compound to fill the gaps created by the hole. The joint compound slows down the setting process allowing you ample time to work on the Plaster of Paris.

These minor repairs can be easily done if the lath backing of the plaster is still in place. All you have to do is mix the appropriate amount of bonding compound with gypsum plaster and use this mixture to fill up the gaps and holes on your walls and ceilings. However, if there are no more lathe backings to support the plaster, then you will have to improvise one before you can apply the plaster mixture.

To set up the backing for the portion of your plaster that you are working on, you will have to use mesh wire to fill up the opening. Push the wire all the way through the gap and anchor it with the sticks or dowels using tie wires. Apply the joint compound-plaster mix in layers, working each layer and allowing it to set before adding another layer.

Once you are able to completely fill up the gap with the plaster mixture, allow it to set and dry before cutting the tie wire. For beginners and those who don’t have a fair skill in plastering, it is strongly suggested that a joint compound is used instead for the final layer and coat in order to achieve a flat and smooth finish.

Home improvement is indeed a very extensive subject and there are many things that you can do yourself easily and quickly and on the cheap to really give your home of a little bit of a facelift. However, there are much bigger jobs that you might want to do.

First you will start off with an idea and you should develop this idea and think on it for a while. Ideally, draw some plans and pictures and try to visualise as accurately as possible is how the end result is going to look like. Whether it is a small job or a big job, you need to think about this carefully since reversing changes is a huge and expensive problem

However, there are various jobs that you can do yourself and you may well prefer to do this not only to save money, but you might feel that you will get the best job possible done. For example, if you simply want to renovate a room and give it a facelift with a new coat of paint, there is often no reason why you can’t do it yourself.

However, before renovating room, try to draw up some pictures of plans before you start. Ideally, it would be great if you could buy a sample of paint just to see how it looks on the wall. If it looks OK, by more and continue to finish the job. There are many things you can do besides painting however.

However, there are many ways you can improve your home just by yourself without having to pay anyone. If you think it is time for a change, why not consider painting your living room for example? Getting new furniture also can make the world of difference. There are a huge amount of things you can do, and it does not have to cost a lot of money.

In order not to waste money, you need to think about things carefully. For example, if you are thinking about painting the room, try to visualise it is best as possible and how it would look. If possible, it is best to get a sample of paint just to see how it is going to look wants the whole room is painted in that colour.

For jobs that you can’t handle, but jobs that are not really big enough to warrant the services of a building contractor, you can hire individual tradesmen and make sure that they are reliable before you even start. It does get very frustrating otherwise have a minor job on hold for ages simply because they are not reliable people working for you.

As more homeowners are tackling home improvement, perhaps some do-it-yourself home improvement tips are necessary. But before discussing those, the number one reason why homeowners are undertaking these projects is to save money. But, it doesn’t end there! The pride involved is also a factor.

Even though the results of the freshly renovated room may be the only reason why people engage in any type of home improvement, others do it to sell their homes easier and make more money doing so. Needless to say, some types of renovations can really raise the value of your home.

If you are a little bit of a handyman or handywoman, there are a multitude of home improvement projects that you can take on. Updating your kitchen in small ways can earn you big bucks. For example, refinishing your kitchen cupboards with a fresh coat of paint or stain and new hardware can make your kitchen look like new.

Installing tiles on the floor or on the backsplash in the kitchen is another renovation that most people can handle, surprisingly. It isn’t as difficult as it seems, as long as you have the tools and equipment required. In this case, the major and most important tool would be the tile cutting machine. You don’t even have to buy it, as they can be rented from any hardware store.

The number one home improvement with the best return on your money is painting. A fresh coat of paint makes a house look better and has been proven to help sell homes much faster. The important thing here is to use good quality supplies to give you the best results. Always use a primer under the paint as the paint will adhere better and have a longer life. Although you may believe that using primer is an extra step that adds to the cost, in essence it is cheaper to use a primer, because a less paint is required. Also, ensure that before you paint you correct any imperfections and dents that may be on the walls.

If you are trying to tackle anything in terms of plumbing or electrical work, then you should let professionals do these jobs as they are not only challenging but can be quite dangerous.

Whatever the case, almost any type of home improvement, be it necessary for proper maintenance or cosmetic, will make your house more sellable and more often than not, can provide more money to you. If you are new at this, however, try to start with smaller jobs before tackling the very large and difficult ones. This way, you’ll see if you are capable of completing a simple project, whereby if you can’t then you know that you should not be engaging in any more complex and time-consuming projects.
